50 Cent, Robots And 3-D Printers Highlight CES

It has become fashionable of late to highlight the fact that the Consumer Electronics Show has lost some of its relevance in a market that's as fluid as technology itself. And while it's true that tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, Google and others may feel like they have outgrown the event, the spirit of CES is very much alive with every tech company that comes to Las Vegas with the hopes of hitting it big. The Combat Creatures booth, hidden in the shadows of larger players, is among the smaller companies creating a buzz at this years show. Their robotic "Attacknids" are drawing a crowd as they battle among themselves for supremacy. "The reaction has been great, everyone loves it," explained Alan Bryant, of Combat Creatures. "Everyone who comes in stops, everyone who comes by, straightaway, you can kind of see them wandering along behind you and then they're like ' oh wow,' and come over and straightway want to play with it, so we've have had hundreds and hundreds of people playing on it." Cube 3D is another of the companies that is drawing a crowd. Their demonstration of the possibility and potential of the 3D printer market is limitless. "Military parts are printed, architectural things are printed, Invisalign, all through our technology, car parts, airplane parts, shoes, architectural designs, all 3D printed," said Adam Reichental, of Cube 3D, one of the main players in the emerging field. " It is not just about the higher end uses about this, it is about making it available to everyone as well." The reality is that CES is still a great place to be discovered, according to Living In Digital Times founder, Robin Raskin. "Really, if you just look around there are robots that wash your windows, there are toilet training wi-fi devices, there are so many cool products being invented right now. Maybe they will be acquired by the big guys, maybe they will be the big guy," said Raskin. Also at the show was rapper turned entrepreneur 50 Cent, now a veteran of CES and once again hawking his line of headphones. "When I came to CES, this is my third CES, when I came I had 3D renderings of a headset style and I was announcing that it was coming. Since then we've launched in 46 countries, and I've accomplished it in a short period of time, actually faster than I anticipated." The 46th annual CES, which attracts thousands of exhibitors and is expected to be attended by more than 150,000 people, runs through Friday (January 11).

UK's First Hand Transplant Recipient Waits To Hold Grandson's Hand

A 51-year-old man said he was looking forward to holding his grandson's hand on Thursday (January 3) after becoming the first UK hand transplant recipient. Mark Cahill, who lost the use of his right hand due to gout, underwent the eight-hour operation to have his hand removed and replaced on December 27 2012. "Hopefully I will be able to get back to work for a start. That's a major difference. I might be able to cut my food up, button my shirts, fasten a pair of shoelaces but mainly I'll be able to hold my grandson's hand," he said. Doctors at Leeds General Infirmary in northern England said a new technique was used which allowed very accurate restoration of nerve structures. "I'm getting slight movement now - my feeling has just started to come back but everything's looking very very good, it's doing well," he added. Leeds Teaching Hospital announced in late 2011 that it was looking for potential candidates for arm or hand transplants. Mr Cahill was one of two potential candidates for treatment after a search across the country, and he was eventually chosen because he was the best tissue match. The Leeds team worked with colleagues in Lyon, France, where hand transplants were pioneered in 1988.

Tech Trends- Smart Phones Privacy 12-27-12

loot on facebook, instagram, and other social media sites. but hardly anyone paused to think about the privacy being given up by sharing those memories. sharyl attkisson takes a look at how your posts can be found publicly. with more than a billion smartphone users, revenue from applications could soon reach $100 billion dollars. a lot of them, like flickr and instagram, can turn your smartphone into a veritable photo studio to create and share snapshots. but many users, like david gibson and his daughter symphone... have little idea as to what may be sent along with the photos. 14:10:00 sharyl: do you have any idea what your smartphone collects, and does? gibson: no not really. sharyl: alright we're going to take a photograph of you and we're going to see if our expert can find us. gibson: okay... sharyl: based on just the photograph... our "expert" is jason hong.. a mobile privacy specialist at carnegie mellon's human computer interaction institute. he's waiting at our washington dc office. nats: sharyl setting up photo of david and daughter we'll see if he can locate us on the street... nats camera click...using only the invisible information embedded in a snapshot we'll post on the web. i'm using instagram. sharyl: and he's going to look at your picture and see if he can find us based on the data that's in the photograph. gibson: oh great! in an instant... hong finds us at 19th and m street. 14:15:33 sharyl: alright, this is our guy. gibson: are you serious? it's not magic. if you've turned on instagram's location setting, data collected with the photo can actually display your location on a map. sharyl: do want to explain to david what you did? hong: i was just looking, they have the location on there... so there's a photo of you and where it was taken.// 14:16:55 gibson: that is amazing. it's all made possible in the new reality of smartphones and the way they track you using your applications, photos and games. 12:33:06 sharyl: you looked at some of the most popular smartphone applications? hong: that's right. we looked at the top 1oo apps and it turns out about half of them had some kind of privacy concerns, in that they were collecting or using some kind of sensitive information. nats angry birds 12l:13:06/13:12:35 hong: this is just a really fun game, you know. lots of kids and adults love this... hong and his colleagues reverse- engineered the code from the popular game "angry birds"... 12:14:31/13:14:00 hong: this is an analysis of what angry birds for android does.// surprisingly, while you play, the application quietly transmits your location... and more. 12:14:53/13/14/23 hong: we found out that it sends a device id to at least three different kinds of companies. you can see them right here.// companies can use the unique id number specific to your phone to track your patterns ... even build a profile of your usernames and habits. but hong says people surveyed were most shocked when they learned that an innocent application that turns your phone into a flashlight -- nats: he flashes around flashlight is also recording your location and phone id. hong says the companies appear to want the data in part to send you targeted advertising. but it's impossible to know for sure. 12:36:35 hong: once the data is outside of your smartphone, it's really hard to know exactly what's going on with the data. in an online post, the makers of angry birds write that it takes privacy concerns "very seriously" and collecting data helps "...create a better user experience... " and the company says it "does not track or store any single person's personal data." instagram declined comment but like other developers provides written detail about data collected and its use. nats angry birds on the plus side, the companies' ability to benefit from collecting your information is a big reason why all those great applications are free. 12:41:25 hong: these kinds of smartphone technologies, they have the potential for a lot of good. but they also have the potential for a lot of harm, too. in terms of embarrassment or unwanted disclosures or just sort of discomfort about being tracked. gibson can't get over how easy it was for him and his daughter to be tracked. 14:17:07 sharyl: what's it make you think about? gibson: oh, if he can find me, anybody can find me. anybody that knows the technology. attkisson standup: app developers are responding to criticism by adding disclosures and written policies.. which, it turns out, almost nobody reads. in fact, hong says if you read each policy on every application or web site you used this year, it would take three months of your life. for cbs this morning, sharyl attkisson, washington. it always seems to make the news when a celebrity does something like driving drunk, punching out the parazzi or taking part in some other indiscretion. but who keeps tabs on famous people who do good things? the site do something.org keeps tabs - and is out with its list of 20 celebrities who aren't getting into trouble. among those making the list are country star taylor swift, justin bieber and "good morning america" host robin roberts. we want to "like" the wdef news 12 the morning facebook page. just search for us on facebook to find us

ISS Crew Readies for Space Launch

The new space crew with astronauts from Russia, the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday (December 18) gave a news conference ahead of their flight to the International Space Station (ISS). The crew will blast off from Kazakhstan's Baikonur on Wednesday (December 19) and are expected to arrive at the International Space Station on Friday (December 21). The launch comes just a few days ahead of Western Christmas, which Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield said he had celebrated early in Kazakhstan. "It's once a year that we gather as a group and fortunately we've had a chance to gather here in Baikanour for Christmas together, but therefore, because of the traditions worldwide it does make all of us reflect - me specifically - on the wonderful things that happened, the friendship and love for friends and family," Hadfied said. Hadfield is slated to take command of the ISS in March when current ISS commander, U.S. astronaut Kevin Ford is scheduled to return to earth with two of his Russian colleagues. The new space crew, consisting of Hadfield, American astronaut Tom Marshburn, and Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko, experienced cold temperatures during their stay in Kazakhstan. On Tuesday temperatures as low as minus 18 degrees Celsius were recorded in Baikonur. "One of the differences between being here in the wintertime and summertime is we walk much faster between buildings," Marshburn said. The crew, who is planning to play a guitar on the ISS, were treated to a guitar song during the news conference. "As an astronaut, we ride rockets for a living, so it's important for us to be optimists, not pessimists. And the steps that they made on the moon opened the doors of invitation to us and what we are doing today as a group is continuing throught that door and learning the things that we need to do and taking one small step at a time so that we can better understand where we are in the universe, and can better lead towards the future," Hadfield said. The three crew members have been training for their mission for over four years. They will join their colleagues, Russian cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky and Evgeny Tarelkin, and NASA astronaut Kevin Ford at the ISS. Chris Hadfield, according to media reports, will make history next year when he becomes the first astronaut from Canada to command the International Space Station.
