Michael Phelps first gold medal was in 400 meter individual medley where he set a world record of 4 minutes and 3.84 seconds. Michael Phelps needs to win 6 more gold medals to surpass the record of 7 gold medals in a single Olympics by Mark Spitz. In Basketball news Team USA took on China in the first preliminary round game of the Olympic basketball tournament. With NBA superstar Yao Ming at the center of Team China, the game was being billed as one of the most important sporting events in the country's historyTeam USA and China were tied at 29 a piece with 6 minutes left in the first half until Team USA pulled ahead with an over powering defense and high powered dunks. Team USA won 101-70, as Dwane Wade led the team with 19 points while LeBron James was close behind, with 18. Yao Ming, whot hit a 3 point bucket to start the game electrified the crowd, finished the game with 13 points on 3 for 10 shooting from the field, and 10 rebounds. The game was such a lopsided affair that President Bush and his father, former President George HW Bush, were seen leaving before the final buzzer sounded. In the metal count, China has taken the lead in medals the host country has taken home a whopping 9 gold medals, 3 silver, and 2 bronze. Team USA are right behind with a total of 12 medals, 3 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze. South Korea and Italy are close behind with 8 medals a piece, while Russia rounds out the top five with 6 medals.
