  • One year on with Arab revolutions-Middle East Today-01-27-2012
    One year on from the beginning of the Arab revolutions which began in Tunisia and continued to Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, and Syria, people continue to struggle. But Analysts argue that these revolutions have been manipulated by the west especially in countries like Syria. The Arab league is also showing what many call double standards in the situation of Syria with countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar who have oppressed the free will of their people for so long and with supporting an armed revolt in Syria which has led to the death of many military personnel and civilians. With hope and skepticism intermingled, this edition of Middle East Today takes a closer look at the prospects of the people's revolutions in the Arab world.
  • Parliamentary election in Iran (II)-Iran Today-01-27-2012
    Iran is gearing up for parliamentary elections in five weeks. 290 seats are available and those deemed worthy to fill them will represent the people for four years. More than 5000 people from 1000 election precincts have registered. At this stage anyone can get in on the game. Among the candidates are a football coach and married couples. These candidates have to be thoroughly evaluated by 4 entities; the Executive Board, Supervisory board, Central Executive Board and the Guardian Council in that order. When approved by one, a candidate moves on to the next and if rejected, one can complain to the next for the reevaluation of his file. The Executive Board has evaluated all 5000 candidates. Seventeen percent of them were disqualified at this stage. Among those rejected are 35 former MPs who nominated themselves for reelection. And some of them were popular and influential figures during their term in office, like HamidReza Katoozian, Ali AbbasPour and Alireza Mahjoob. This has raised eyebrows. Of the first time candidates Ali Motahari, the son of prominent revolutionary Ayatollah Morteza Motahari was also been rejected. The Executive Board accuses him of a having a lukewarm allegiance to Islam, the establishment and the leader. We know this because although the reasons why a candidate is rejected are communicated to them confidentially, they themselves often publish rebuttals.   • Official gifts given to Ceausescu to go under hammer
    Official gifts given to late Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu will go under the hammer in Bucharest. A bronze yak statue, leopard skins and silver doves are among the items being auctioned off. Other items include Communist-era posters, medals, photos and flags some dating back up to 70 years ago. The event is being billed as the Golden Age a reference to the final years of Ceausescu's rule, when Communist party officials painted a rosy picture of life in Romania. Ceausescu was overthrown after the 1989 anti-communist uprising. He was executed along with his wife Elena.
  • Animatronic dinosaurs thrill people visiting Australian museum
    In Australia, the Queensland Museum of Natural History is celebrating its reopening with both new and prehistoric guests. In the hope of adding some thrill to the celebration, scaly hosts were in attendance. It is not the first time in the 150-year-old museum's history that specimens behind glass have found their way to a more interactive exhibition. But the welcoming committee of animatronic dinosaurs was the most exciting, with many young visitors delighted to see the scaly creatures even though they were frightened.
  • Yemeni protesters call for ouster of corrupt remnants
    Anti-regime protesters came out in their thousands on the Sixty Street in the capital Sanna to celebrate the departure of Ali Abdullah Saleh and call for the ouster of the corrupt remnants of his regime. Press TV's Yousef Mawry reports from Sana'a.

    After a soldier in the Afghan army opened fire on a French military base, President Nicolas Sarkozy suspended all operations in Afghanistan and threatened to withdraw his nation's forces by the end of this year. But after a talk with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai in Paris the threat has proven to be hollow, as Sarkozy announced he will enforce NATO's original timetable.   • Algeria 10 new political parties authorized ahead of elections
    Following Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's major reforms, the Algerian Ministry of Interior and Local Collectivities has licensed ten new political parties among twenty which submitted their candidacy files for the upcoming legislations in May.
